I know, I know. A smoothie recipe?!?

This is one of those recipes I’m sharing just because of the amount of times I’ve made it.

We have two favorite smoothies around these parts: this Healthy Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie and this Pineapple Smoothie.

We could alternate between them every day and everyone would be happy (although we make others just to keep life interesting!).

Not all fruit freezes as well or blends as easily when frozen, but pineapple is one of those fruits that freezes perfectly and it doesn’t turn out gritty if you don’t have a $500+ blender on hand. Bananas is another.

I add frozen banana to all of my smoothies because it adds the perfect touch of creaminess and adds a little staying power. A little goes a long way, so if you don’t want to end up with a banana smoothie then add just a few pieces!

How to freeze bananas:

I have two types of frozen bananas in my freezer at all times: whole in the peel and sliced in a freezer bag (no peel).

The whole bananas I use for baking things like this Banana Bread or these Banana Oatmeal Muffins. The frozen bananas add so much moisture when they’re thawed and added to baked goods, and it means that I’m never throwing bananas in the garbage because they’re just as good later.

My bagged, sliced bananas I use in smoothies. This makes it easy for me to throw in just a few pieces and I always have some ready to go for my next smoothie craving. They blend easily and make my smoothies nice and creamy!

How to freeze pineapple:

Pineapple freezes perfectly! If you have a cut pineapple that is on the verge of going bad and needs to be store, simply place it in a freezer bag or freezer container and freeze for 3-6 months.

I like to flash freeze it first on a piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet, and then toss it into a freezer bag so that it’s not all frozen into one big lump.

This way, it’s easy to just toss in a few pieces when I need!

How to make this Pineapple Smoothie recipe:

There’s really no way to go wrong with this one, so I have just one tip:

Place all the ingredients in the blender the way the recipe is written.

You really want the most easily blended ingredients on the bottom of the blender, and the hardest at the top.

In this recipe, the toughest to blend are the pineapple chunks (the water content makes them freezer more firmly than the banana chunks), so they go on the top.

Other than that? Feel free to break the rules if you want to 😉

Variations on this Pineapple Smoothie:

  • Toss in some mango for a mango pineapple smoothie
  • Add strawberries for a strawberry pineapple smoothie
  • Try flavored yogurt or different types of juice for an interesting twist
  • Add plain kefir instead of Greek yogurt for a probiotic boost!

How to bump up the nutritional value of this pineapple smoothie recipe:

  • Add a scoop of instant oats for a boost of fiber and protein (you can pre-soak them if you prefer)
  • Add a spoonful of hemp hearts, ground flax, wheat bran or protein powder
  • Use water instead of juice for a lower sugar option
